Building Construction - Luxury Beachside Hotel and Apartment Complex - Abu Dhabi - MEP Construction Manager.

I joined the Abu Dhabi ETA construction team as an office based PM, but was rapidly transferred to site to perform a CM role on a prestigious four tower complex directly opposite Emirates Palace (needs must!). The project was for the Abu Dhabi royal family on the site of the old Khalidiya Palace.

The four towers included a prestigious five star hotel and three apartment blocks. Nurol (Turkey) were the main EPC contractor with ETA providing the full MEP installation.

Our design office and engineers were based on-site (40+), whilst the 400+ construction personnel got on with the job. The co-ordination effort between MEP and Building construction personnel at site is a major activity, where both design and construction space and the phrase 'denied access' occur every minute of the day.

The logistics involved with procuring and storing equipment and machinery, alongside the daily planning of work activities and access are enormous loads on the construction plan.

The general construction workforce for all sub contractors on site have to be considered as untrained and inexperienced, therefore, the emphasis on safety is of paramount importance.

The heat, the dust and working six days a week requires a level of energy and control which is rarely experienced in most working environments that I have experienced. Completing a site walk around in temperature around 50 degrees C, requires care and attention, as well as a good shower and change on completion.

The inner atrium of the hotel was a major feature of the project, visually impressive but a major concern during construction. I revisited the hotel a few years ago (see my earlier blog), the hotel was quiet and sedate, exclusive and plush, a far cry from when I stood there in a hard hat and steel toe caps and soaked through. The memory will never fade.
