That's it, Seoul is done, its back to the UK and back to the office tomorrow. Seoul was great, I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Koreans, GS E&C's reputation as an EPC held true, it was a pleasure to work with them.
Engineering Manager for the Project Management Consultant (PMC) in Seoul, Korea.
Eleven months, how time flies. The Bahrain LNG Import Terminal was a great project, every day was learning day, so you can ask for little else. The marine construction challenges, the off shore regulations and operational requirements, the LNG ring main, the zero flaring option, the piling and platform weight increase, the route change of the sub sea pipeline, horizontal directional drilling, the local Bahraini regulations, a fascinating challenge.
Project Manager for the Design of the worlds two largest LNG Tanks, Malaysia, Petronas.
The previous 13 months at Whessoe was spent Project Managing the design of these two huge Tanks. The Samsung EPC team were based in the Petronas Towers HQ and the Whessoe Design Team were based in Darlington, England. I constantly travelled between the two offices, which took it's toll, but watching the construction of the Tanks in Pengerrang Malaysia now being ahead of schedule is reward enough. The 3D Model proved it's worth, ironing out many of the construction challenges that are hidden within it's 2D predecessor. Piling on reclaimed land, designing the huge domed roof that is air lifted into position, the steel reinforcement challenges to meet code, the inner tank design and welding requirements, the structural design effort of the steel platforms and the pipe tower and the stressing challenges entailed for 48 inch pipes that are to be cooled to -162 degC, it certainly kept us busy.
What Next ?
Now that is the question. Like many oil & gas design companies, Whessoe are experiencing challenging times with no major project on the books right now. Whessoe Engineering is 225 years old, it is older than many countries and a household name within County Durham from where it has always been based. Our fingers are crossed.
